For Ormond resident, keeping fit makes for happier, healthier life

This Fitness Spotlight is an occasional series profiling area residents who have made healthy habits a priority in their lives. WHO: Barbara Benson-Braunstein, fitness instructor for 26 years DAY JOB: Medical assistant CURRENT RESIDENCE: Ormond Beach How long have you been fitness conscious? My first recollection was when I was 9 years old and my mother encouraged me to participate in competitive swimming. Was there a defining moment that got you started on a healthier lifestyle? Swimming along with surfing, ballet and jazz classes kept me in shape and healthy for many years. My "defining moment" was actually when I stopped doing all of those activities. After gaining some weight and not feeling great mentally, I knew that I had to get back into exercise! I started jogging, played some tennis and went back to ballet classes. Soon after that, around 1984, someone told me about a funky aerobics studio that had just opened up in Ormond Beach. My best friend had just died and I was grief stricken and very depressed so I thought that maybe this would help make me feel better mentally and physically. It saved my life! What do you do to stay in shape? I currently teach aerobics and spinning classes at the Ormond Beach YMCA. I also swim, walk/run the Granada Bridge, take yoga classes, bike ride and take active vacations. What is your workout routine? I teach aerobics Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. I also teach spinning on Saturdays. Early Monday and Wednesday mornings, I walk/run the Granada Bridge with my friend. During the week, depending on the weather and my state of mind, I'll walk 1/2 mile to my mom's house or work out in the pool. I'll also allow myself to do nothing at all and that's a good thing, too! What do you say to people who say they don't have time to exercise? Living a happy and healthy life should be a priority and exercise may be helpful in reaching that goal. If you're a parent at home taking care of children or are constantly on the go with soccer practice, dance lessons, etc., there are options. For an aerobic activity, go outside and walk briskly or jump rope three or four days a week. Purchase dumbbells in various weights for strength training to complement your aerobic activity. If you are working outside the home, use part of your lunch break to take short walks or runs and eat a small nutritional lunch. Depending on where you work, park your car at the farthest point from the building and use stairs instead of the elevator. Before you begin any form of exercise, however, you should consult your physician to make sure that you are not in any way compromising your own health. Do you have any fitness secrets you'd like to share? Be your own best friend! Don't put impossible demands on yourself or you'll just set yourself up for failure. It can be hard work but make sure to have fun. Start slowly with modest expectations and progress at a comfortable pace. As you progress, begin to challenge yourself. What about nutrition? Healthy eating involves several factors such as eating fruits and vegetables, portion control, avoiding processed and fast foods and calorie intake. Eating out at a restaurant is always a challenge. When my husband and I are eating out and the portion is beyond what is necessary to satisfy our appetites, we will cut the portion in half and take the remainder home for another meal. Do you have any advice for others on how to get started? Consider getting started as a new beginning and an opportunity to meet friends who have a similar interest in being healthy and staying physically fit. Embrace your new beginning, start slowly, be kind to yourself and only set realistic goals that you can accomplish. -- Compiled by Kathy Page
